Rolando Aarons
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rolando Aarons (born 16 November 1995) is a professional footballer who plays as a winger for Hellas Verona on loan from Newcastle United.
Born in Jamaica, Aarons was called up to the England U-20 team in August 2014 and has indicated his intention to play in the England set-up.
Club Career
Aarons joined Newcastle United in 2012 after being released by his home town club Bristol City. He made his reserve team debut on 8 February 2013 against Stoke City and scored in his second reserve game against Crystal Palace 17 days later.
Aarons travelled with the Newcastle squad to their game against Fulham. He was not included in the matchday squad as the Magpies lost 1–0. Reserves teammate Ľubomír Šatka also travelled with the squad for the first time.
On 1 April 2014, Aarons signed a professional contract with Newcastle United.
2014–15 season
Aarons had an impressive pre-season prior to the 2014–15 season, scoring one goal and creating one assist in the 2014 Schalke 04 Cup against Bundesliga team Schalke. Shortly after, he was allocated the number 16 shirt. On 17 August 2014, he made his Premier League debut in their first match of the campaign, replacing Yoan Gouffran for the final 16 minutes of a 2–0 home defeat to Manchester City. He scored his first senior goal in the 3–3 draw with Crystal Palace on 30 August. He also set up teammate Mike Williamson for Newcastle's third goal in the same match, striking the post with his own effort. His contribution to the match described by The Guardian as "thrillingly incisive". Aarons came back from England U-20 duty with a hamstring injury; scans in mid-September determined that it would take around six weeks for the injury to heal. On 29 October, Aarons returned from injury to score his second goal for the club in the fourth round of the League Cup, opening the scoring in Newcastle's 2–0 away victory over holders Manchester City. In early November, Aarons suffered a recurrence of his hamstring injury, ruling him out for another month.
International Career
Aarons is eligible to represent either England or Jamaica at international level. In August 2014, he received his first call-up to the England U-20 team, marking his debut with the opening goal in a 6–0 friendly match win over Romania on 5 September. His club manager Alan Pardew confirmed that, despite interest from Jamaica, Aarons intended to pursue an international future within the England set-up.
Style of play
Aarons operates on the outside of midfield or as a winger, usually on the left side. He is left-footed and known for his injections of pace and technical ability. He has been compared to Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling in his playing style and in his descent; both are Jamaican-born English players.
Personal life
Aarons was born in Kingston, Jamaica. He migrated to England at the age of 5 to join his mother who was already living in the city of Bristol.[17]

Ainsworth swoops for Newcastle starlet
Rolando Aarons joins on loan until January.
Gareth Ainsworth has made an exciting deadline day swoop for Newcastle United forward Rolando Aarons, on a loan deal until January 13th.
September 2th 2019
The 23-year-old has earned five caps for England’s under-20s and played 18 times for the Magpies in the Premier League, scoring twice, whilst most recently he impressed during a loan spell at Championship side Sheffield Wednesday in the second half of last season.
The cousin of Norwich City defender Max, Aarons goes straight into the squad for Wanderers’ League 1 showdown with Lincoln City at Adams Park on Saturday (k.o. 3pm).
Ainsworth said: “We’ve been hit by a couple of injuries up front and it looks like we’ll be without Fred Onyedinma and Paul Smyth for a little while, but I’m delighted to be able to bring Rolando to the club and I think it’s a real coup to attract someone of his calibre to Adams Park.
“We’ve started the season really well, particularly at home where we’ve played some fantastic attacking football, and Rolando will complement our style with his pace and ability to run at players and create chances for himself and others.
“Wycombe Wanderers has been a great platform for many young loan players down the years – something we’re extremely proud of – and I’ve got no doubt that Rolando can prove what a talented player he is during his time with us. I’d like to thank Newcastle for trusting us with one of their young stars and now we’re looking forward to seeing him in action, starting with this Saturday’s big game against Lincoln.”
Born in Jamaica, Aarons arrived at Newcastle from Bristol City in 2012, and signed his first professional contract two years later. His first-team debut came in the Premier League against Manchester City, and he scored and set one up against Crystal Palace two weeks later.
He netted on his debut for England Under-20s in September 2014 and finished the season with six first-team appearances for the Magpies, before scoring once in 11 games the following year.
Loan spells in Italy (with Hellas Verona) and Czech Republic (with Slovan Liberec) followed before he returned to the UK, signing on loan for Sheffield Wednesday in January 2019 and scoring once in nine appearances.

Aarons, fallimento anche in Repubblica Ceca
By Redazione - 1 Febbraio 2019

Rissa a Newcastle, Aarons a processo
aprile 24, 2018

FANTACALCIO: RUOLO, CARATTERISTICHE E RENDIMENTO 6
FANTACALCIO: FREQUENZA AGLI INFORTUNI 5,5

Benitez?

THE FG-FILES: Rolando Aarons, Verona. Consigli fantacalcio, ruolo e caratteristiche
COME CAMBIA LA SERIE A: LA PRESENTAZIONE DI OGNI NUOVO ACQUISTO, LA SUA STORIA, LA FANTASCHEDA, LE STATISTICHE ED I FANTACONSIGLI INDISPENSABILI IN SEDE D'ASTA
Gianmarco Della Ragione | 05/02/2018 18:45 2'

Newcastle United fans react on Twitter to Rolando Aarons' display against Manchester City
Newcastle United were beaten 1-0 by Manchester City last night at St. James' Park.

Newcastle United winger Rolando Aarons has come under criticism, after his performance against Manchester City last night.
Aarons was surprisingly given his first Premier League start of the campaign against Pep Guardiola’s men, but he failed to take his chance.
The 21-year-old was unable to influence the game in an attacking sense, with Newcastle fans feeling that he has now become overrated.
Aarons is the most overrated player since kieron dyer must of both been pulling the same caravan however at 21 dyer was in a different league #overrated NUFC

Sad to say because I've always hoped he would come good but have to say that could have been Aarons last chance to impress for #nufc tonight and I think the only way he could have grasped it less would have been by not turning up. Him and Murphy look out of their depth massively.

There has been suggestions that Aarons could move on from Newcastle in the January transfer window.
The wide-man has really struggled to break into Rafael Benitez’s starting line-up, and could now face another spell on the bench, after failing to catch the eye.
Newcastle were undone last night through a goal from Raheem Sterling. The England international latched on to a brilliant pass from Kevin de Bruyne, before slotting a shot under Rob Elliott.
Newcastle have now won just one of their last 10 Premier League matches, and sit just one point above the drop zone.

Hull City's move for Rolando Aarons has broken down - here's why
The Tigers were hopeful of signing the winger on loan
By William Jackson 12:22, 31 JAN 2018
Newcastle United winger Rolando Aarons will not be joining Hull City this transfer deadline day.
The Tigers had made an ambitious late move to take Aarons from St James Park to the KCOM Stadium on loan until the end of the season, but it seems they have lost out to overseas competition.
The Mail understands the winger has rejected a move to City and instead is now expected to sign a loan deal with Serie A club Hellas Verona before tonight’s 11pm deadline.
Nigel Adkins has spoken at length about his desire to bring in another winger this month to bolster his options out wide, but it now seems the club will have to explore other avenues.
The club are still hopeful a deal can be done for Barnsley skipper Angus MacDonald, with the two clubs still locked in talks.

Rolando Aarons loan talks underway between Hull and Newcastle

Roland Aarons has fallen down the pecking order at St James' Park
Hull City are in talks with Newcastle United over a potential loan deal for Rolando Aarons, say Sky sources.
The 22-year-old has struggled for first-team football this season due to injury and has fallen down the pecking order, appearing only five times.
Aarons joined the Newcastle youth system in 2012 after being released by Bristol City, and has gone on to play 27 times for the club, scoring four goals.
Newcastle handed the winger his debut in August 2014 - Aarons coming on as a substitute during their 2-0 defeat to Manchester City.
Newcastle also expect to lose Henri Saivet on Deadline Day, the midfielder has arrived in Turkey ahead of a loan move to Sivasspor.
Sky Sports News understands there could be up to three departures from St James' Park on Deadline Day.
Chelsea's Kenedy is the only player to have arrived this month, joining on loan until the end of the season, while Newcastle have had two bids for Feyenoord striker Nicolai Jorgensen turned down, and saw Daniel Sturridge opt to join West Brom.

Rafa Benitez reveals why Rolando Aarons can leave Newcastle in the transfer window

Aarons has made five appearances – and scored one goal – for Newcastle United so far this season.
And Benitez is open to loan offers for the 22-year-old after signing Kenedy, 21, from Chelsea for the rest of the campaign. Benitez is also looking to sell or loan midfielder Jack Colback, while defender Jamie Sterry could also be farmed out. Asked if he expected anyone to leave before next week’s transfer deadline, Benitez said: “Colback and Sterry are on the market, and the other players? It depends if we sign or not and in which positions. “One that maybe now has more chance to leave is Rolando Aarons. “I was talking with him and he was saying we were bringing in another player and maybe he could go. But we need to have the right team for him. “We had one good option, but now we have to wait and then we are waiting for any other options.
“He’s a young player, and he has to play. Bringing in Kenedy, we have another body in a position where normally he would play. “If he can get a good club, we’ll allow him to go.

Rolando Aarons says people ‘overreacted’ to Newcastle winning only 1 game in 97 days
Rolando Aarons "Newcastle and Stoke are both good teams so it should be a good game."
Monday 1st January 2018 by Graham Porter
Rolando Aarons had only played 66 minutes of Premier League football before getting his first start against Manchester City.
Rafa Benitez leaving a host of first choice players out of his team with Brighton and Stoke games in mind.
Rolando Aarons put in 71 disappointing minutes and was once again dropped from the squad totally on Saturday as Rafa Benitez made seven changes to his starting eleven.
The 22 year old has an interesting perspective on the season so far, believing that the biggest negative so far was people overreacting to Newcastle’s run of one Premier League win in 97 days, a run which included just one point from nine games as part of it.
A little bizarrely, Rolando Aarons claims that people overreacting to the poor displays and results probably contributed to the poor run continuing longer than it would have…
Rolando Aarons speaking to NUFC TV:
‘What have you been up to over Christmas?’
“I have just been eating really.
“My mam comes down, my auntie comes down, they just cook.”
‘Very important to kick the festive season off with that win at West Ham?’
“It was a massive game for us and it kind of kickstarted our season again.”
‘What have been the positives and negatives this season?’
“The positives is that we are halfway through the season.
“The negative is that people were overreacting a bit (to not winning matches).
“It might have played a bit of a part in the run we went on.
“We are a good group though, a good team, a good spirit – looking forward to the second half of the season.
“We just do what we do, nothing has changed since the start of the season.”
‘How will the players deal with the pressure of these important games?’
“I think the same way we deal with every game.
“We know what we need to do to win games and the Stoke one is no different.
“Newcastle and Stoke are both good teams so it should be a good game.”

Rolando Aarons not a worthwhile signing for Aston Villa
Aston Villa have been linked with a move for Newcastle United’s Rolando Aarons in January, but the club should look at other targets instead.
by James Reeve2 months agoFollow @JamesRJReeve
Aarons is a 22-year-old winger that has progressed from the Magpies’ youth academy, having joined them from Bristol City in 2012.
He is a talented prospect that has featured in 20 league matches for the club since making his professional debut in 2014.
He is likely to leave Newcastle, potentially on loan, in January after making just two Premier League appearances this season.
Top tier sides Crystal Palace and Huddersfield Town have reportedly been joined by Aston Villa as the teams most interested in Aarons at the midway point of the season.
For Villa, however, bringing in Rolando Aarons may not be the best signing for the promotion-chasers.
Steve Bruce’s side currently have Robert Snodgrass and Albert Adomah playing consistently, with the two players having a hand in 16 league goals so far.
Adomah has scored 10 goals of his own while Snodgrass has scored two and assisted a further four in the Championship – seeing the club climb to 5th in the table.
The biggest area that Aston Villa need help in, is up front.
Gabby Agbonlahor is returning to training after missing 3 months through injury, but the Villans are still missing Jonathan Kodjia and Scott Hogan.
A January loan move for a striker capable of scoring regularly in the Championship will be the number one target for Bruce, with the wings being an area not needing much more than what they already have.
Agbonlahor is capable of playing out wide and that is likely to be where he plays as a regular substitute moving forward, given his injury history over the past few seasons.
With Financial Fair Play tightening the club’s budget greatly, Bruce will need to put his money into moves that help him out the most.
A striker is a necessity and the club can’t afford to compete with the likes of Palace and Huddersfield for the Magpies’ young winger – making the deal one that should be avoided.
There is no doubt that Aarons has plenty of potential and could be a good addition for Aston Villa but, given the help needed in other areas of the team, now is not the time to make such a move.

With Huddersfield Town short of goals, especially away from home and seemingly lacking a cutting edge up front in the final third of the pitch, head coach David Wagner and chairman Dean Hoyle, will have players on their radar to bring in during the transfer window in January.
According to Hoyle when he spoke exclusively to Radio Leeds, the Terriers don't need any more strikers, but they know what positions they need to fill and have been tracking players. Rolando Aarons looks to be one of the players the Terriers are interested in bringing in from Newcastle United.
Lack of game time
According to various report, including the Daily Mirror, Huddersfield are one of three clubs interested in the England under 20 international. Aarons has not started for the Magpies since the EFL Cup tie against Nottingham Forest back in August. Having had a strong pre-season the winger was not in the match day squad against Chelsea. Aarons will be looking to get match time, so a move away from St James' Park could well be on the cards in the January window. Newcastle will be looking for a considerable fee for the player, which is likely to take Aston Villa out of the equation.
Recurring injury experience
Having struggled with a recurring hamstring injury during the last two seasons, the youngster has failed to completely break into the first team squad. Lacking game time will be frustrating for Aarons. Wagner and the Terriers are used to dealing with hamstring injuries, as loanee Kasey Palmer has suffered from hamstring problems that kept him out of a lot of last season, making his return at the play off final. Palmer signed another season-long loan deal with Town, only for the hamstring to be an issue again. This time the injury was not as bad as first thought and Palmer returned to the squad, although not yet to the starting line up.
This experience of dealing with recurring injuries like Aarons looks to stand the Terriers in good sted to make a move in January for the winger. As a direct runner with the ball, and with pace to burn, along with delivering quality crosses into the box, the Magpies could see their Premier League rivals make a bid of the young International in January. Town would be favourites of the three reported clubs to be interested, as they would be in the position to make the best offer. Their nearest competitor from Premier League clubs is reported to be Crystal Palace.

CRYSTAL PALACE LINKED WITH ROLANDO AARONS
LUKE OSMAN @LukeOsman
4 dec 2017
Crystal Palace reportedly want to sign Rolando Aarons from Newcastle.
According to the Mirror, a host of clubs are keen to land the young winger, who has not been getting regular game time up at St James’ Park.
Aarons was once tipped for big things but has seen his promise slowly stagnate over the years, with him now struggling to get a look-in ahead of the senior wingers in Newcastle’s squad.
The 22-year-old is capable of playing on either flank and possesses an abundance of pace and trickery.

It’s stated by the Mirror that Palace, among other potential suitors, are hopeful of tying up a cut-price deal for Aarons given his recent lack of involvement with the Magpies.
However, if the Eagles are to tie up a deal for the young wide man, they will need to fend off competition from elsewhere, the report claims.
Huddersfield Town are reportedly interested, while Aston Villa are also keeping tabs on Aarons’ situation.

What’s Next for Rolando Aarons at Newcastle?
Assessing his future
By Cameron D Johnson | Nov 16, 2017, 5:18pm GMT
It has been three years since Rolando Aarons burst onto the scene, scoring against Manchester City in a Capital One Cup win. He looked to be Newcastle’s new teenage sensation before injuries derailed his progress. There is so much potential yet to be fulfilled, and Aarons turns 22 today.
Aarons has this year to fight for playing time and challenge for a starting role at the club. No one doubts the skill of the winger still ripe with vitality, but it seems he has not convinced people of his ability to avoid the injury bug which has decommissioned him more times than suitable for development.
Potential to get injured is not a legitimate reason for excluding a player from the lineup, yet Aarons has been denied opportunities to play even when he is fit. Rafa Benitez must not have confidence in the young winger. This is surprising because after signing a five year contract in 2016, Aarons can be quoted to have said that he was “happy that (Benitez) has faith” in him. Aarons is still under contract until the summer of 2021.
There has not been indication of disaccord between Aarons and management, so there must be a plan for Aarons to remain a Newcastle player despite a lack of first team action. He does not have overwhelming competition for the wing positions at the club, but Aarons finds himself out of favor even at full health. He even requested to play with a reserve team to have playing time. It is possible that he goes out on loan to a club in England’s second tier in the January transfer window.
Regardless of what the club staff have planned for Aarons, we supporters love to see him play. Happy birthday Rolando!

BRADFORD, ENGLAND - JULY 26: Rolando Aarons of Newcastle United during a pre-season friendly match between Bradford City and Newcastle United at Northern Commercials Stadium on July 26, 2017 in Bradford, England. (Photo by Alex Livesey/Getty Images)
Watching the preseason friendlies for Newcastle United this season, one of the consistent positives was the play of winger Rolando Aarons. After missing most of last year with injuries, it was encouraging to see the speedster performing well.
Unfortunately, Aarons has not had the chance to carry that momentum over into the Premier League season. He was a top man in the club’s Carabao Cup loss in August to Nottingham Forest, but hasn’t featured in a first team match outside of that. Instead, he’s relegated to watching the club play and getting match time with the U-23’s.
It’s hard to argue that he should be getting starts on the wing. Christian Atsu has been electric this season and opposite him, Matt Ritchie’s left foot has been involved in multiple crucial goals for Newcastle United.
Unless there is an injury, hopefully not, or there is a massive drop off in quality from Atsu or Ritchie, also hopefully not, Aarons may be stuck as a spectator. He will get his limited chances with the reserves and in cup fixtures.
He’s only 21 years old and may request to go on loan this January. Aarons has spent time in the Premier League previously and could be a boost to a Championship club looking to make a second half of the season push. He’s under contract for a few more seasons with Newcastle United and hopefully can find a spot back in Rafa Benitez’s rotation.

Newcastle star Rolando Aarons slammed talks of crisis (GETTY)
Alarm bells are ringing after Rafa Benitez’s men were condemned to a third straight defeat as they were dumped out of the Carabao Cup by Championship side Nottingham Forest.
Aarons played down the importance of Saturday’s visit by fellow strugglers West Ham as the Geordies go in search of their first league goal and point of the campaign.
But ther Newcastle ace insists it’s way too early to hit the panic button even if he admits victory over West Ham at St James’ Park on Saturday would provide a much-needed boost.
“It’s only two league games,” he said. “It’s not the end of the world, and I think everyone’s over-reacting a bit.
“I wouldn’t say it’s a huge game on Saturday because it’s only the third league game of the season.
“I suppose every game becomes bigger when you haven’t picked up a result, but I’m sure we’ll do well and if we win on Saturday, everyone forgets about the last two games.
“We’re not too down, we just need to dig deep and get a result. We’re disappointed but we’re working hard behind the scenes.
“We’ve got quality here but we’re just missing a little something at the minute. I don’t know what it is, but I’m sure we’ll be alright.”

Newcastle, rientro con gol per Rolando Aarons
AUGUST 24, 2017

SOCCER star Rolando Aarons appeared in court yesterday over a mass nightclub brawl.
The Newcastle United winger is accused of violent disorder after a fight broke out in the VIP section of Livello bar on the city's Quayside.
Prosecutor Keith Laidlaw said one man man suffered injuries "when bottles were smashed and bottles where thrown around".
Aarons, 21, is accused of violent disorder in relation to the 3am incident last October.
His solicitor Geoffrey Forrester said told Newcastle JPs that the allegations would be "seriously contested".
Six other people are charged with violent disorder and wounding with intent. They did not enter a plea yesterday.
The case was adjourned and all the defendants were bailed. They will appear at Newcastle crown court next month.

The star, 20, took the aunt and two pals to the celebrity hangout on Saturday night.
The source explained: “He was having a great time. But he noticed eight to ten blokes trying to bump and grind with his auntie on the dance floor.
“It was all treated as a joke and Rolando laughed it off.
“When they started to film it, Rolando’s mood changed and he took great offence.
“He went over and told them to stop. His view was that they’d had their fun and it was going too far.
“He made his views pretty clear and that’s when all hell broke loose.

“One man attended hospital with facial injuries.”
PAIN IN THE AAR-ONS
Newcastle suffer huge injury blow as Rolando Aarons is ruled out for eight weeks
Rafa Benitez's attacking options dwindle as winger suffers a fractured metatarsal

NEWCASTLE UNITED have been dealt a big injury blow with the news that Rolando Aarons will be sidelined for at least two months.
The winger has suffered a fractured metatarsal which will rule him out until October.
Aarons, who would likely have been named in the England U21s squad, was stretchered off during the Magpies 2-0 win over Cheltenham in the EFL Cup on Tuesday.
The 20-year-old only recently signed a new five-year contract at Championship side Newcastle.
And after suffering a frustrating two years of injuries, the attacker was hoping to push on this campaign under Rafa Benitez.

Aarons, 20, has scored three goals in 18 appearances for the club since joining in 2012 after a spell at Bristol City.
The England Under-20 man came on as a second-half substitute in their opening game of the season against Fulham.
"It's something that was always going to happen, but it's nice to get it done," he said.

Rolando Aarons
Perhaps Newcastle United’s 2014/15 season would not have been so wretched had Rolando Aarons been fit more often. Rare glimpses of the 19-year-old winger showed a crowd-pleaser in the making, a player with the speed and skill to beat an opponent. Aarons, an England Under-20 international, offered hints of incision, too, scoring two goals in six games. With Sammy Ameobi loaned out to Cardiff City, the path seems clear for the younger and more gifted Aarons to have a breakthrough season — if he can stay fit.

Newcastle United's brightest and best: Freddie Woodman and Rolando Aarons aiming for the stars
Rolando Aarons was a Bristol City bad boy, but now the Newcastle United winger is on the brink of stardom - and so is Freddie Woodman
ByMark Douglas

Newcastle Uniteds Freddie Woodman and Rolando Aarons, with their awards at the Newcastle Sports Awards at the Civic Centre.
Sometimes the cynicism that surrounds Newcastle United can feel suffocating. Rolando Aarons and Freddie Woodman, a 17-year-old who is as confident and eloquent as he is agile, are the antidote to that.
These two prospects are not the saviours of St James’ Park, but in an era where the club’s greatest modern-day player talks of a hopelessness, their rich promise hints at brighter days down the line.
But first, Aarons had a problem to overcome. The man who emerged from the cocoon of the youth team in the early months of the season to soar to the fringes of the England senior set-up has an admission to make: he doesn’t like being centre stage.
When you are about to pick up the prestigious Sport Newcastle Wor Jackie Award – the bauble that is generally viewed as the staging point for the jump into first-team football the following year – that can be a problem.
“I don’t like getting up on stage so I wouldn’t say it was nice to win it!” he chuckles.
“But it was nice to win the honour and to receive it. I’m happy I won it. It’s a huge honour to win it. Winning it was actually something that I set out to do when I came to Newcastle and I’ve got it now so I will use this as a motivation to push on and get other trophies in the future.”
The award is a reward for a breakthrough year that saw Aarons dubbed the most exciting attacking prospect to emerge from Newcastle’s Academy since Andy Carroll.
A teenager told to work hard enough to earn a loan to a Football League club in pre-season – Bradford City and Ipswich Town were eyeing the Kingston-born prospect in the summer – his form was good enough for him to remain in the side into the latter stages of the warm up games. Summoned from the bench by Alan Pardew with an under-pressure Newcastle stuttering against Crystal Palace, his impact was almost immediate.
A heady concoction of speed, an unexpected strength and a genuine fearlessness on the ball, he raised St James’ Park from his torpor with a wonderful cross for the second half leveller – followed by a maiden Premier League strike.
Newcastle United's Rolando Aarons celebrates his goal against Crystal Palace
This was no overnight sensation, though. Monday’s award came at the end of a long and winding road that included leaving the Bristol City Academy at a time when his life was at a crossroads.
For the first time today he speaks of the personal problems that saw him depart the south west and move to a city where the first year was “hell”.
Jamaica was the starting point: the hustle and warmth of Kingston. “But I moved to England when I was five. My mum was here before, but I moved here with her.
“I played in a Sunday league team when I was nine and was spotted and moved to Bristol City when I was 13. I left there and came to Newcastle on a trial, which was an amazing moment. They accepted me and the rest has just been crazy.”
So why would Newcastle tread where Bristol City wouldn’t? Aarons’ response is illuminating: “Where I lived in Bristol wasn’t the best of areas and I wasn’t the best of persons back then, but I’ve matured and grown up.
“I definitely think that moving away helped me to mature and grow up. It has helped me become what I am now and I’m not looking back at all.”
If he did, there would be cause to be proud of the way he took the right path: a decision that is paying dividends. It has been a steep learning curve, he confesses.
“I’m here by myself. My best mate recently moved over here which was great but it has been tough, I can’t lie,” he said.
“The first year I struggled badly. I couldn’t cope and to be honest I wanted to leave. But I’ve got good people around me who tell me to stick in and stuff.
“It has been difficult. I got injured again the other day and Fred (Woodman) came over and asked about me. I said to him, well I won’t use the words I used with him!
“But it’s mentally very difficult. It’s hard but after a few days you put your head right and it’s not going to stop my whole career.
“I believe in myself that I can get back to that stage. There’s still everything to come from me. I’ve done nothing yet. Nothing.”
Raheem Sterling’s stunning rise at Liverpool brought the almost inevitable comparisons with England’s other winger of Jamaican heritage.
There are similarities beyond their background: both possess pace and have made an impressive impact in their debut years. But it is a lazy match and Aarons understands that.
“I don’t want to be compared to Raheem Sterling. I’m Rolando Aarons, I’m my own man,” he says.
“I see it that I haven’t done anything yet. When I hear Raheem Sterling’s name I don’t want to be compared not because I don’t think he’s a good player but because it’s disrespectful in a way. He’s achieved a lot and I’ve done nothing yet, I want to prove myself.”
[...]
For Aarons, that is a feeling he yearns for. Dogged by talk that his absence has been down to a contract dispute – which he vehemently denies – he has not played this year.
“The last five months have been difficult. It’s crazy when everyone starts talking about you, but then people forget,” he says.
“I have injury problems but it’s important that I don’t rush back. You see what happened last time, I can’t afford to do that. The physios are working hard and everyone is working hard to make sure it’s done properly this time.”
Newcastle United winger Rolando Aarons wins Sport Newcastle's Wor Jackie Award
Rolando Aarons was presented with the Wor Jackie Award after an exciting pre-season and early-season for Newcastle United

Chronicle Editor Darren Thwaites presents Newcastles Rolando Aarons with his award at the Civic Centre
Rolando Aarons’ potential was recognised with Sport Newcastle’s “Wor Jackie” Trophy last night.
The prize, presented by Chronicle editor Darren Thwaites, is awarded annually to one of Newcastle United’s outstanding young players.
Jack Alnwick, Sammy Ameobi and Adam Armstrong are others to have won it this decade.
It is recognition of the exciting performances 19-year-old Aarons put in during pre-season and the opening months of this campaign.
The winger made three early-season substitute appearances in the Premier League, and two League Cup starts.
He scored against Crystal Palace and Manchester City. At Selhurst Park he also created Mike Williamson’s goal and hit the woodwork.
Frustratingly, he has not played since coming off the bench at home to Liverpool on November 1 due to a succession of hamstring and thigh problems.
Aarons joined Newcastle in 2012 after being released by Bristol City. He signed his first professional contract in April.
Born in Jamaica, he has declared his intention to represent England, and scored on his under-20 debut against Romania in August.
Although football is always strongly represented at Sport Newcastle’s annual dinner, rugby union received particular attention in this World Cup year.
Former England World Cup winner and Newcastle Falcon Jonny Wilkinson, who retired at the end of last season, shared the sports personality of the year award with his mentor, Steve Black.
Darlington Mowden Park fly-half Katy McLean won the Frank Brennan Trophy after captaining England to last year’s women’s World Cup.
The Wilkinson Sword was awarded to racehorse owner Graham Wylie, who also owns the Close House golf course.
Newcastle United Foundation’s disability football development officer Reggie Dornan won the Stan Calvert Award for coaching, while Newcastle Eagles carried off the Simon Bates Foundation prize.

For the fourth successive year we present to you the Don Balon list of 2014, featuring the 101 youngsters we believe to be the most talented on planet Earth.
Over many decades Spanish magazine Don Balon would publish their list of the top 100 youngsters in world football at around this time of year.
Due to economic pressures and a scandal that brought about the arrest of their editor, Don Balon is no longer with us and we initially stepped into the breach four years ago to list the best young players currently plying their trade in world football.
There is one rule for this top youngsters run down, and follows the format Don Balon put in place over many years:
To qualify for inclusion, the player must be born on or after January 1, 1993
The list below is in alphabetical order and includes video evidence, just click on the name of the player.
We would like to thank our followers on Twitter and Facebook for aiding us in this endeavour.
There could well be omissions you are not happy about, or inclusions that you don’t understand. All constructive feedback is welcomed in the comments or on our social media channels.
We love making this list and are proud to run a football website on a daily basis. Thanks!
1. Rolando Aarons (Newcastle United, 19) – Beginning to make his mark on the Newcastle United senior side, this young winger is blessed with pace reminiscent of fellow Jamaican Usain Bolt. Aarons has scored two goals in his first five games for the club including a brilliant goal against Manchester City which announced himself to the rest of the league.

Rolando Aarons blow for Newcastle
TALENTED ... Newcastle's Rolando Aarons.
BY MILES STARFORTH
Published: 13:21 Updated: 13:23 Tuesday 11 November 2014
NEWCASTLE United’s Rolando Aarons is out until next month – after suffering a recurrence of his hamstring injury. The winger made a goalscoring comeback from a six-week lay-off against Manchester City late last month. But Aarons limped out of training last week and didn’t feature against West Bromwich Albion on Sunday. And the 18-year-old will miss the fixtures against Queens Park Rangers on November 22 and West Ham United a week later.
However, Aarons – who forced his way into Alan Pardew’s first-team squad after impressing in pre-season – is staying positive. He said on Twitter: “Everything happens for a reason. I’ll be back...again.” Aarons’s strike against City took his goal tally for the season to two, with the England Under-20 international having netted against Crystal Palace in late August. He signed a professional contract at Newcastle in August. Aarons joined United from Bristol City two years ago.

Rolando Aarons seeks a reward for his sterling effort at Newcastle
NEWCASTLE'S exciting teenager Rolando Aarons has his eye on Raheem Sterling's shirt.

But it's not Sterling's England jersey Aarons craves - yet. He's after the one the Liverpool star will wear at St James's Park tomorrow.
At 18, Aarons is already being likened to Sterling because of the touch and lightning pace that enabled him to score United's first goal in their sensational Capital One Cup win at Manchester City.
But while there are similarities between the pair, Aarons accepts he is a long way from matching the Liverpool player's international status.
"Raheem has played really well for the last two or three seasons and I'm nowhere near that level yet," he said yesterday.
"I'm not Raheem Sterling - and Raheem Sterling is not me. I don't want people to compare us, although he's obviously a player that I admire.
"I'm nothing like him and I've got a long way to go before I can even consider myself to be anywhere like that.
"He's played for England at the World Cup, and I've only played three or four games for Newcastle United.
"I don't think there's any reason to get carried away - I'm just focusing on playing football."
Aarons must wait to discover if he will be involved in tomorrow's Premier League clash between the two sides, hoping he can track down Sterling to swap shirts. But he won't be emulating Mario Balotelli and looking for an early exchange.
"Hopefully I'll get the chance to play in the same game as him at the weekend," Aarons said. "If that happens I might ask for his shirt. Why not? He's a good player.
"Whatever happens, though, I definitely won't be swapping at half-time."
Aarons, who began his career at Bristol City before joining United's academy, is one of Newcastle's "fearless four" who were singled out for praise by manager Alan Pardew yesterday following the win at City.
Aarons, Adam Armstrong, Sammy Ameobi and Paul Dummett all featured in the 2-0 success at the Emirates after progressing through United's academy.
Pardew said: "These younger ones don't have fear. This group is stronger than I've had in all my time here. They have all come through our academy and are looking like Newcastle players of the future.
"Out of that group only Sammy has disappointed in the past, but this year he has a new-found belief in himself.
"The other three have made their progress very rapidly. Of all that four, they all have great talent and deserve to be in and around our team.
"Rolando has a massive asset which is pace. I saw that Phil Jagielka is apparently the quickest in the Premier League, but I would bet on Rolando and Gabriel Obertan against him any day of the week.
"He also has a nice temperament. I think he had some troubles at Bristol City, but I really like him as a person.
"He has got his feet on the ground, he has got tremendous potential and this could be a breakthrough season for him."
Aarons said: "It helps to have so many of us young players playing in these games together. Young players help to bring enthusiasm and drive, and that showed."
Pardew revealed yesterday that Aarons and Ryan Taylor, another of the key men in Wednesday's win, almost didn't start as they came back from injury lay-offs.
"I did think long and hard about our team because I was concerned about one or two players, particularly Rolando and Ryan," said the United boss.
"They hadn't really done enough training to warrant playing even half a game, which I had pencilled in for them. But that worked out well for us. They both trained so well the day before that I went with my instincts rather than logic.
"We have players in form at the moment and right now it's difficult to pick the bench, let alone the team. It's important the squad has some depth to it because that's always been a problem since I've been here."
Newcastle have now won three games in a row to lower the decibel count on the fans' criticism of Pardew, but he refused to take credit for the transformation.
He said: "I don't think it's that important. What is important is that we're winning games again and that's what the fans want to see.
"We have a group that could excite them this year. There is a lot of pace in the squad and it's about getting it on the pitch and using it in the right manner, which we are doing at the moment.
"It's a nice transitional period for us. We have had a couple of very good teams here in my time, but last year it kind of fell away for us and we are trying to build a new side. It takes time to bed in, but we are starting to find our feet."

Manchester City 0-2 Newcastle United Aarons (6' minutes), Sissoko (75' minutes)
By Jonathan Jurejko
BBC Sport
Newcastle goalscorer Rolando Aarons made his senior debut on the opening weekend of the season - against Manchester City
Holders Manchester City were knocked out of the League Cup as a youthful Newcastle side earned the club's first win in 12 attempts at Etihad Stadium.
Teenage forward Rolando Aarons put the visitors ahead with an angled drive into the far corner.
Newcastle keeper Rob Elliot superbly denied Stevan Jovetic before his skipper Fabricio Coloccini sliced against the post before half-time.
City enjoyed plenty of possession but lacked incision in the final third as Newcastle, whose performance showed a wonderful mixture of defensive resilience and attacking intent, clinched a deserved victory.
City boss Manuel Pellegrini watched his unbeaten record in the League Cup disappear with a whimper, but will be more concerned about another limp performance from his side.
His side have stuttered at home and abroad in the past week, having blown a two-goal lead to draw at Champions League opponents CSKA Moscow and then lost 2-1 at top-flight rivals West Ham.
So they would have been keen for a morale-boosting performance before Sunday's Manchester derby against United at the Etihad.
Instead, they were left rueing another disappointing defeat sealed by substitute Sissoko skipping through the defence before slotting in.
Moussa Sissoko slid in the second as Newcastle reached the last eight.
Now they will travel to Premier League rivals Tottenham in the next round, bidding for a place in the semi-finals for the first time since 1975-76.
Newcastle's players embraced in a celebratory huddle at the final whistle after reaching the quarter-finals of a domestic cup competition for the first time under boss Alan Pardew.
Magpies supporters had called for Pardew to be sacked after a poor start to the campaign in which their team failed to win any of their first six Premier League matches.
Match facts | |
Rolando Aarons' strike ended a run of 525 minutes without a goal for Newcastle against Man City. | Newcastle had previously failed to score in their last five matches against Man City and had conceded at least twice in each of their last 14. |
But the pressure has been relieved after a recent revival with Newcastle earning three straight wins.
Pardew had been boosted by successive Premier League victories over Leicester and Spurs but decided to name a youthful and inexperienced side to face the Premier League champions.
His decision was justified as Newcastle took a sixth-minute lead through the second goal of England Under-20 international Aarons' fledgling career.

Adam Campbell and Rolando Aarons set for rehab after untimely injuries reduce Alan Pardew's Newcastle United squad options further

Alan Pardew has been dealt more bad news when it comes to injuries after seeing his squad options dented by two fresh entries to the treatment room at Benton.
The Magpies boss has learned that Rolando Aarons could be out until November after scans from his hamstring injury revealed that it could take six weeks to heal.
And rookie striker Adam Campbell has also gone under the knife to cure a long-standing hernia niggle which first started troubling him during a loan stint at St Mirren last season.
The Geordie youngster had returned to Newcastle from a loan stint at League One Fleetwood but rather than sending him back to the Football League, United have opted to get to the bottom of why he isn’t hitting the heights expected of him.
He will now need a good recovery in order to prove himself with time ticking down on his contract.
Campbell - still just 19 - last appeared for the first team at Newcastle in the 1-0 loss to Arsenal in May 2013.
Yet he was part of the squad that travelled to New Zealand earlier this year and was hoping for another chance to shine under Pardew.
The blow for Aarons is a nightmare for Pardew.
The flying winger had broke into the first team in pre-season and was ready to start games.
But an injury sustained while with England Under-20s means he may have to wait until mid-November to get his chance again.

Premier League: Crystal Palace snatch 3-3 draw at Newcastle United
Wilfried Zaha upstaged fellow substitute Rolando Aarons to earn Neil Warnock a point in his first match back as Crystal Palace manager following a 3-3 draw at Newcastle United.

Teenager Aarons looked to have inspired Newcastle to a first win of the season after coming off the bench to score one and create another until Zaha pounced five minutes into added time to make an immediate impact following his return to Palace on loan from Manchester United.
BEST OF THE MATCH
Man of the match: Despite spending under half-an-hour on the pitch, Rolando Aarons changed the game for Newcastle when he came on as he scored an excellent header and was directly involved in Mike Williamson's goal.
Moment of the match: Wilfried Zaha's equaliser in the dying embers to earn Palace an unlikely point after being second-best for much of the game.
Attempt of the match: Rolando Aarons' curling effort that flew over Julien Speroni and bounced off the crossbar, leading to Newcastle's third goal.Save of the match: Tim Krul's fingertip save down to his left to deny Martin Kelly's well hit effort from outside the area.

Newcastle United star Rolando Aarons' fightback after being dumped by Bristol City shows real character
Newcastle United teenager Rolando Aarons didn't sulk after being let go by his hometown club - instead he made it to the big time
By Neil Cameron
11:30, 9 SEP 2014 UPDATED 09:48, 10 SEP 2014
Leon Legge of Gillingham tackles Rolando Aarons of Newcastle United
It's never nice to be told you are not good enough for your dream job.
That happened to Rolando Aarons, aged 16. It takes a strong character to get over such a disappointment.
Maybe it’s harsh to say he was not good enough. But having joined his local club Bristol City at 13 and then told three years later that he wouldn’t be offered a scholarship, who would have blamed him for giving up?
Plenty of talented kids walk away from football after such a setback. At that age it’s easy to think that the game wasn’t for you after receiving such heartbreaking news.
Bristol City are like any other club. They can’t take on every kid that has come through the ranks and sometimes the decision with hindsight was the wrong one.
Two years. That’s all it has taken for Aarons to go from the scrap heap to the Premier League. You have to hand it to the young man.
I spoke to Bristol City academy manager Gareth Jennings who took time out of his busy day not just for a chat, but also to do a bit of digging about what happened to Aarons – as it was before his time at the club.
“I asked the guys who knew him and they all only had good things to say about Rolando,” Jennings tells me.
“He worked hard, was a nice young man and was always about the place. He always wanted to learn more. There has been quite a turnaround in staff here, so I couldn’t say why the coaches at the time took the decision they did.
“But I’m kicking myself that I wasn’t there because he’s done brilliantly so far this season for Newcastle and now the England under-20 squad. Good on him.”
If any real remorse exists within Jennings then he hides it well. He is genuinely delighted that Aarons has made it, or at least has started to make it, at St James’ Park.
Jennings said: “It’s great to see a Bristol boy in the Premier League. He deserves praise for going from being released by a League One club to Newcastle United. Usually it’s the other way around.”
This is the crux of the Aarons story. There are better players than him who have been released by a club at such a tender age. That’s not the issue. The issue is what any young players does next.
Aarons didn’t sulk. He didn’t give in. Instead he did enough to catch Newcastle’s eye and was awarded a professional contract at the start of this year.
Jennings said: “It says a lot about his character that he didn’t give up. So many would have had they been in Rolando’s position.
“Look, every club has to tell a young lad that perhaps it’s best for their career that they move on. It’s not nice, but that’s part of football.
“I’m told that back then it was decided that the best thing for Rolando was to try somewhere else, but that his dream of being a professional player was not over.
“But not ever lad believes that and you are right to say that many get lost. The key thing about any young player is what goes on inside their head. Rolando is clearly strong and that’s why he continued to work and signed for such a big club.
“Rolando obviously had that desire to keeping going, to drive forward. Maybe being rejected gave him the spur he needed.”
Bristol City enjoy a good reputation as a club that rears its own talent. They have 200 kids at the academy right now, with 23 on scholarships and a few on the fringes if the first-team.
So it’s a club that gives their kids a chance, which begs the question: How could Bristol City allow such a talent to slip through their fingers?
Jennings said: “You are always going to get some wrong. It is almost impossible to say for certain whether a 16-year-old will make it or not.
“If I had been here, I’d like to think that I would have offered Rolando a deal and we could then sell him to Newcastle.
“Everyone here is delighted to see a local boy doing so well. My only hope is that somewhere down the line, he fancies a move back to his hometown club.”

BOOTHROYD'S BOYS HIT ROMANIA FOR SIX IN TELFORD
England U20s kicked off their season in spectacular fashion with a stunning 6-0 victory against Romania in Telford.
England U20s celebrate their resounding victory
After a frustrating first half, goals from Rolando Aarons, Josh Murphy, Lewis Baker, Kwame Thomas and a brace from Callum Robinson gave Aidy Boothroyd a near-perfect start to his reign in charge of the Young Lions.
England senior manager Roy Hodgson was among the crowd – and he would have been delighted with the attacking craft displayed by the youngsters.
After his headline-grabbing debut for Newcastle against Crystal Palace at the weekend, winger Aarons was given his chance from the off.
Fellow international newcomers Christy Pym, Matt Grimes and Josh Harrop all had to do with a place on the bench as Boothroyd began with an attacking lineup.
Joining Aarons in a four-pronged frontline were Chuba Akpom, Jordon Ibe and Robinson – and the foursome were on the front foot from the first shrill of the referee’s whistle.

Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha scores last-gasp equaliser at Newcastle
Louise Taylor at St James' Park

It was the sort of breathless, blink-and-you’ll-miss-something afternoon that raised far more questions than it answered. For instance, was this deserved point proof that Crystal Palace’s decision to bring back Neil Warnock as manager is a masterstroke? Did Rolando Aarons’s thrillingly incisive contribution, after stepping off the substitutes’ bench, confirm that he is the most gifted product of Newcastle United’s academy in decades?

ROLANDO Aarons sees his international future as being with England – despite interest from Jamaica, according to Alan Pardew.
Aarons was yesterday called up by England’s Under-20s for their friendly against Romania in Telford on September 5. The 18-year-old – who was born in Jamaica – was promoted to United manager Pardew’s first-team squad after impressing in pre-season. And the left-footed winger has recovered from the knock which forced him off in the Capital One Cup tie against Gillingham on Tuesday night in time for tomorrow’s Premier League home game against Crystal Palace. Pardew says Aarons’s international call, which came on the same day midfielder Jack Colback was selected for the senior England squad, did not surprise him. “I think that’s less of a surprise at that level,” said Pardew. “He’s really done well in pre-season, and he is a player that is so quick he is going to be very dangerous for the opposition “He’s a player that will feature for us in the first team this year.”
Jamaica are also interested in Aarons, who came to England as a child. “I assume knowing how confident the boy is that he’ll be setting his sights on England,” added Pardew, who also has high hopes for Adam Armstrong and Freddie Woodman.
Striker Armstrong and goalkeeper Woodman helped England win the European Under-17 Championship in May. “We have three very good English players in Arma, Freddie Woodman and Rolando, who has just burst on the scene,” said Pardew.
“That’s really great for us, because they are three massive positions in the Premier League – a goalkeeper, a No10 and a wide player. “They are like gold dust, so we are looking after them and making sure they do it right.”

Newcastle United youngster Roland Aarons wanted by Championship clubs - and Jamaica

Rolando Aarons of Newcastle United celebrates scoring for Newcastle United against Schalke
Rolando Aarons’ stunning pre-season form has attracted interest from Championship clubs – but Newcastle United are set to keep the winger at St James’ Park for the first half of the season.
Aarons has been the surprise star of the summer for Newcastle, coming from nowhere to stake a claim for the first team squad despite having never played a minute of senior football.
His form has prompted the Jamaican FA to make an enquiry about the Kingston-born winger, but the English FA are also monitoring his progress, with the result that he is in contention for a call-up to one of the under-age squads next season.
Newcastle have also fielded enquiries from a clutch of clubs in the Football League, including at least one from the second tier about whether the club will be willing to let him go out in loan. League One Bradford City, who are managed by Alan Pardew’s friend Phil Parkinson, are also understood to have asked to be kept informed of his availability as they look to boost their squad numbers.
It is quite a rise for a player who was a pivotal part of Newcastle’s FA Youth Cup run last season, and impressed senior management with his attitude and ability back then. Still, he has come on in leaps and bounds during a pre-season campaign in which he has not looked out of place among more senior players.
A loan move is one possibility being explored by the United management, who also have a decision to make on the future of fellow prospect Adam Armstrong. But at the moment the coaching staff are hoping to retain Aarons (pictured above) to help him develop on the fringes of their first team group.
It would be a big call for Pardew to include him in the squad for the visit of Manchester City a week tomorrow, but Pardew is willing to take the risk – if he thinks there is a dividend to be reaped.
After the trip to Germany, Pardew pushed the young winger as one of the breakout stars of pre-season. He said: “The real highlight of pre-season has been Rolando. He was terrific again. It’s nice to see a young player really pushing, and I thought he caused real problems for Schalke – long may that continue.”
United have decisions to make on a few of their fringe men. While Aarons has pushed his cause in the summer, Sammy Ameobi – who is coming into the final year of his contract – may benefit from first-team football, and Sheffield Wednesday are interested in taking him on loan.
Newcastle must also decide whether Remie Streete, once considered a promising prospect but now struggling to make the transition from Academy to first team squad, should be allowed to go out on loan.
Newcastle will face Real Sociedad this weekend hoping to make the most of a tough work-out against difficult opposition.
Pardew insists that his approach will be moulded to cope with the demands of facing Manchester City in a few days.
“It’s about getting ready for the week after,” Pardew told the club’s official website. “I’ll still make a lot of substitutions in that game; it’s really about building for Sunday week.”
United must make a good start to blow away some of the negativity that clung to the club at the end of the last campaign, and Mike Williamson is targeting a positive beginning that can bring some momentum.
He said: “It’s important to get a good positive start and everyone feels good. We’re looking forward to it.”

Rolando Aarons has become the latest Newcastle United youngster to sign a professional contract with the Club.
Last month, Adam Armstrong, Lubo Satka and Freddie Woodman put pen to paper after progressing from the Little Benton Academy.
And now 18-year-old winger Aarons, who joined the Magpies from Bristol City two years ago, has followed suit.
He was part of the first-team squad for the Barclays Premier League game at Fulham in the middle of March and has scored three goals in his last four second-string appearances.
"I'm buzzing - it's a special moment for me," the Jamaica-born teenager told nufc.co.uk.
"This is where it starts and I need to get my head down; the hard work starts now.
"I feel like I'm stronger, faster and fitter and I've benefited from the work I've been doing with the fitness coaches here.
"It seems as though the gaffer is really interested in bringing young players through so it gives you hope that you'll get a chance if you keep doing well."
Football Development Manager Peter Beardsley added: "Rolando's had a brilliant month.
"He's always had ability but he's shown great character in the last month and we're delighted that he's agreed to sign this contract.
"He has a lot of talent and now he's adding the work rate to it. He has a bright future and it's good news for us going forward.
"The owner is all for youngsters doing well and what he's doing at this football club at youth level is incredible, I genuinely mean that. Long term, it will be brilliant."
